LinkedIn is a powerful tool and the world’s largest professional network so if you want to progress in your career and professional development, a well-designed LinkedIn profile is essential in your job search regardless of your occupation. Recruiters and employers search on LinkedIn every minute of every day for suitable profiles to match their job opportunities, therefore, you need to make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and stands out from the crowd. The following tips will enable you to create the perfect profile.

A Professional Photo

This is a fantastic opportunity to make the best first impression and attract connections to your profile. You are selling your brand so aim for a professional photo.

Create a Bold Headline

This does not have to include your entire career history however it is important to focus on the jobs in your most recent career that are related to your career goals and ensure your roles are described in depth and use keywords that will resonate with your target markets.

Join Groups

Connect with LinkedIn groups that are relevant to your profession, this will demonstrate your expertise and knowledge to recruiters and prospective employers. It is also a great way to increase your connections and expand your network. You can join up to 50 groups, but your time may be best spent focusing on a smaller and more targeted number.

Keep Your Page Active

Share articles with relevant content to highlight your expertise. Keep abreast of what your connections are sharing and to remain active, post regular and relevant content. Keep abreast of what is happening in your industry and share that information.

Make Relevant Connections

Review and connect with relevant connections, it is recommended to aim for around 350-500 connections on LinkedIn.

Request Recommendations for Your Skills and Experience

You can request recommendations; have a think about those you have developed a good working relationship with. Recommendations and endorsements will make your LinkedIn profile stand out and is a great opportunity to demonstrate your value.

Congratulations and Welcome! You’ve just arrived in Australia or recently returned home and now it’s time to start searching for your new workplace. There’s a world of opportunity, career goals and dreams to make a reality, in amongst the stress of finding housing, setting up bank accounts and healthcare, as well as finding community, friends and having exciting new adventures. Landing that first job and breaking into the Aussie job market is usually the biggest hurdle to overcome. So, how can we make the process a little easier and less stressful.

Research

Like any country, Australia has its own job-seeking and recruiting systems and cultures. Knowing the landscape of Australian industries, laws and regulations is an essential first step to finding work. Researching the local market, key companies and players, average salaries, working rights and qualifications will put you in good stead to begin your job hunt. Build connections within the community and flex your networking skills, as this is a major way companies source their employees. Utilizing key online job sites like LinkedIn, Seek and Indeed, and understanding how each of them function differently will be a valuable tool under your belt. If you’re residing in Australia on a visa, make sure you know the rules and regulations for your specific visa, and remember to keep your ‘right to work’ current.

Rework Your Resume

Every country has a different formatting style to resumes, and these can change and update with the times. Your resume is one of the biggest tools you have in landing a job, so take the time to perfect your resume. Make it easy to read (1-2 pages with headings and minimal colour), clear and concise and don’t be afraid to sell yourself. Moreover, tailor your resume and cover letter to each job application, find key skills and attributes from individual job ads and make them clearly present in your resume. There are many online resources and training courses to help make your Australian resume look professional and clean. Keep personal information to a minimum. Personal information such as marital status, age, race, religion and photos should never be included in an Australian resume.

Be Open-minded and Resilient

Landing that first local job can take some time, and sometimes a step back in your career trajectory. Stay open to various opportunities, because once that first role finds you, experience and connections will follow. Look into short courses and volunteer opportunities that can beef up your resume and expertise. Romeo…. Romeo... where art thou Romeo?! As if candidate sourcing wasn’t hard enough, the pandemic came in and made the dart even harder to throw. The new culture of remote working, the rise in entrepreneurship, and an increase in finding work that is more aligned to our values and mindset has all contributed to a shift in sourcing strategies for recruiters.

So how do recruiters find the best candidates? Is it all about remote working now? Higher salary options? Flexibility?

Here are some top tips for 2023:

Push the Passive!

When sourcing, it is important to not just wait for candidates to come to you. The root of sourcing is to actively promote new candidates for potential roles. This means that passive candidates who are not actively looking for a new position should also be considered. These candidates can be found using your current platforms or even attending networking events.

Go Deep!

When searching for candidates online or through your own company’s CRM, don’t stick to generic search terms such as the job title or qualification. To get deeper search results, try using the position’s responsibilities or related systems or companies. The Boolean options on your search platform can also zone in on the exact experience the job requires too.

Personalise!

Not one shoes fits all – and neither does one message! Connecting with your candidates is an essential step in the recruitment process to allow them for feel more than just a number. Personalise your messages by mentioning something about yourself, your team’s culture, or why you specifically think that that candidate is suitable for the role. Don’t over sell though, keeping messages short and sweet encourages candidates to reply and protects your company’s name.

Firstly, the format of your CV is crucial. Recruiters typically spend only 6-8 seconds scanning a CV, so it's important that yours is clear, well-defined and easy to read. Use clear section headings and a font that is easy to read. Also, try to be creative and consider a different format or design that will catch the recruiter's eye. Black and white CVs are outdated, so be bold and stand out.

Another crucial aspect of your CV is spelling and grammar. Use tools like "Grammarly" to check your spelling and grammar. Use quotation marks when using quotes and ensure you talk about your previous jobs in the past tense, and your current job in the present tense.

Remember, your CV should be short and brief, no longer than 1-2 pages. Only include relevant roles and experience that apply to the job you are applying for. If you have extra space, you may consider adding hobbies and interests that may help establish A connection with the hiring manager.

One of the most common mistakes that job seekers make is exaggerating the truth. Be honest and confident about your skills and experiences. Avoid lying or overselling yourself, as this may backfire during the interview process.

Make sure your email address is professional, appropriate, and presentable to potential employers. A simple email format is "[First name] [Last name] @gmail.com."

It's important to include all your work experience and address any gaps in employment. Explain any issues, such as maternity leave or medical leave due to health complications.

Social media can play a crucial role during the hiring process. Make sure you delete any content that you do not want employers to see or ensure that your profiles are private. Recruiters may search through your social media accounts, so be sure to remove anything that could harm your chances of getting the job.

It's not always necessary to include references in your CV, as most employers will not request this information until later in the interview process. Also, make sure to check with each referee before listing them on your CV.

Lastly, triple-check your CV before submitting it. Ensure that all of your personal details, such as your name, phone number, email address, and location are correct. These small details can make all the difference in the hiring process.

Congratulations! You can lay down the textbooks and put graduation behind you. Now, all you need to do is get out there and start doing what you've dreamt about these last few years. Entering the workforce as a graduate can be an exciting and daunting experience. You may have spent years studying and preparing for this moment, but nothing can fully prepare you for what to expect once you start your first job. As you sort out your work wardrobe and adjust your thinking to working in a full-time professional environment, you might also be wondering what to expect. In this blog, we'll explore some of the things you can be anticipating when entering the workforce as a graduate.

#1 LEARNING ON THE JOB:

One of the biggest things to expect when entering the workforce as a graduate is that you'll be learning on the job. While you have learned a lot in your studies, there's still plenty more to learn about your field and your specific role within it, it’s time to get the hands-on learning experience! Don’t dismiss all the knowledge that your studies have provided you, now you will need to adapt this knowledge to your specific environment. There will be processes and systems that you’ve never seen or heard of before, and there will also be some that you’re ready to tackle. This can be overwhelming at first, but it's important to remember that everyone must start somewhere. Be open to learning and soak everything up, you never know when something will come in handy. Don't be afraid to ask questions and seek out guidance from your colleagues. If you don’t ask, you’ll never find out!

#2 DEALING WITH FAILURE:

No one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. No matter how hard you try, failure is inevitable, and it can be demotivating and discouraging. As a new graduate, you may be especially hard on yourself when you make mistakes. However, it's important to remember that failure is a natural part of the learning process. Instead of beating yourself up over your mistakes, try to learn from them and use them as an opportunity to grow and improve. Take the time to reflect on what went wrong and how you can improve. Seek feedback from your colleagues and superiors and use it to improve your performance, it is important to take responsibility for your mistakes and work towards fixing them. No one is expecting you to know it all right off the bat, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Remember that failure does not define you. Everyone makes mistakes, and it is how you learn from them that matters. Try not to be disheartened, and keep soldering on, you’ll get there! Keep a positive attitude, learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward.

#3 MEETING NEW PEOPLE:

Starting a new job as a graduate means meeting a lot of new people. You'll need to introduce yourself to colleagues, managers, and clients, and build relationships with them over time. This can be intimidating at first, but it's important to be friendly, approachable, and open to meeting new people. Make a positive first impression, be polite and professional, and be willing to engage in conversations with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. You are going to meet people that are outside of your usual social circle, this is great! Take it as an opportunity to learn about people’s backgrounds, experiences and ways of life. Don’t be scared to have a chat, people are often nicer than you expect. Remember to be confident and be true to yourself; you were hired for a reason!

Entering the workforce as a graduate can be a challenging but rewarding experience. By being open-minded, adaptable, and always willing to learn, you'll be able to navigate the challenges of your new job and find success in your chosen field. Remember to be patient with yourself, and to seek out guidance and support from your colleagues when you need it. Starting a new job as a graduate can be overwhelming, and it can be helpful to have someone to turn to for guidance and support. If you are a Recruiter, you know that there are many day-to-day tasks, duties, and responsibilities that you need to get through. Today I am going to cover 5 habits or strategies I implement into my daily life as a Recruiter to be more effective.

#1: KNOWING YOUR CLIENT'S NEEDS AND COMMUNICATING WITH THEM

Coming into work every day and having a clear understanding of the needs of your clients and being able to identify candidates with the appropriate skill set and expectations they are looking for is extremely important if you want to be an effective recruiter.

Have you spoken to a candidate who you are not 100% sold on? Call your client and run through a bit about them and get their thoughts before ruling them out.
Are you working on a job and there is a reoccurring question you just quite cannot answer? Call your client and find out the answer.
Are you meeting with 3 clients on Thursday? Call your client and update them so they know by the end of the week you will potentially be presenting them with some potential new staff members.

Knowing your clients and knowing them well could be the difference between your agency and another agency hitting the brief and providing adequate service and leaving a really good impression.

#2: THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Thinking outside of the box is an essential tactic you need to practice every day if you want you and your business to stand out from the crowd.
The candidate market is an everchanging beast which is why it is important to ALWAYS be thinking outside of the box whether that is with your marketing strategy, role requirements, options for candidates, options for clients and so on.

#3: KEEPING CANDIDATES ENGAGED AND UP TO DATE

As we know, candidates can come and go quicker than we can blink so something I do on a daily basis is ensure the candidates I am currently working with are feeling involved, updated and kept in the loop on their journey to finding and securing their next role. Having transparent and honest communication with your candidates can ensure they are feeling important and do not have false expectations in terms of timelines and updates.

#4: NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK

Recruitment is nothing without people, candidates, clients, and conversations, so reaching out to new profiles on LinkedIn, making new connections or other social media platforms is super important.

It could be the next candidate you place into one of your client vacancies or the next General Manager that reaches out to you for a quote on assisting them with finding new staff.
The more connections and conversations you have, the more people will see what your company is up to, working on, the programs or charities you are supporting or invested in and more!

#5: MANAGING YOUR TIME

Time management is one of the best recruiter skills as there is always a lot to do! Making sure you manage your time well and manage all aspects of your role requirements will help you to be a more effective recruiter.
Personally, I am a to-do list sort of person and make lists every day and check my tasks off as I get through them(sometimes almost as quickly as I add the next thing on) and I find that the best way to manage my time and priorities for the day.
